Santiago Emergent Ecologies

Santiago Emergent Ecologies is a design competition organized by Jeannette Sordi and Felipe Vera, following a study commissioned by Danco Enterprise, owner of the 1000ha area in the periphery of Santiago. The area is strategically located between the Ecological Conservation Site “El Roble” and the outskirts of the Chilean capital city. Once mostly cultivated, today the agricultural activity suffers from the shrinkage of water reservoirs and precipitations. The study led to the definition of a competition brief and, thanks to the grant awarded by the Chilean National Council for Culture and the Arts, we launched the Santiago Emergent Ecologies competition in 2016. The international competition called for proposals that could highlight the agricultural and periurban connotations of the site, that could also include, and protect, the ecological site of “El Roble”.

Geoglifos Biológicos, the winning project designed by the Colombian office Mapas Arquitectura y Territorio (Juan Carlos Aristizabal, Roger Julián Escalante, Lucas Bueno y Adriana Imitola), proposed a metropolitan park structured around three main axes that also provided water collection and irrigation, visually connecting the urban expansion with the valley of the ecological site. The winning proposal and the 5 awarded honorable mentions are presented in the homonymous exhibition curated by J. Sordi, F. Vera and S. Dambrosio at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Santiago and published, together with a series of essays, in the book Ecologias Emergentes edited by J. Sordi (Santiago: Sacabana, 2016)
