XX Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism of Chile Dialogos Impostergables

Globally, the condition of constant crises has ceased to be an exception. Every day it becomes increasingly common to witness iterative economic escalations, rising levels of inequality and social divisions, extreme cases of political uncertainty and the effects of climate change displacing millions of people, as is the case for over forty million refugees that occupy camps all over the world. In Chile, the unequal distribution of urban attributes, a product of a free ride given to impatient capitalism, deployed in certain parts of the city, the contrast between the highly privileged and productive environments and precarious and destitute urban areas, is evident to everyone.

The XX Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism of Chile Dialogos Impostergables [Unpostponable Dialogues] was conceived as a call for action, an invitation to conventional and unconventional practitioners, political leaders, activists, citizens, intellectuals, independent thinkers and the society in general to contribute to the exhibition and the events, to engage in radical dialogues, to push for action and for the construction of a simultaneously aesthetic and ethical city. The need to establish a South-South dialogue, the desire to design and construct plural cities, open to the diverse and inclusive of differences, and promote transversal relations between democratic, economic and politic forces, were the common treads.

The Biennial presented over 200 projects, selected within four thematic areas – practice, academia, activism, public policies – and organized in seven sections that were also the umbrellas around which events and conferences have been organized: identity, common, participation, integration, vulnerability, resoures, future.
